19 years ago, the UN declared 22nd March as World Water Day. Since then, observance has grown in support of this day and the general public is encouraged to not use their taps throughout the whole day - a trend that has become familiar in social media campaigns such as Facebook and Twitter.
‘The UN and its member nations devote this day to implementing UN recommendations and promoting concrete activities within their countries regarding the world’s water resources’. Each year, one of the UN agencies takes lead in promoting and coordinating activities for World Water Day.
NGOs also use this day to increase attention on the promotion of clean water and sustainable aquatic habitats. Creating awareness amongst the public on the critical condition of water in some parts of the world has become a common focus for NGOs on World Water Day.
In honour of this important day, GiveMeTap has launched its TapRap Competition to create awareness of it’s cause and for a call to action for water lovers across the world.
